Whole Foods Market, a store that specializes in natural and organic foods, is coming to Mississauga.

With 285 stores in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., the Mississauga location will open in 2011 at Rathburn Rd. and Square One Dr. as a standalone entity.

The store, which will be 40,000-sq.-ft. in size, is expected to be similar to the company’s Oakville location, which features an in-house bakery, deli, fresh-baked pizza, and the area’s largest selection of certified organic produce, bulk food and grocery items.

The store will reflect the company’s mission of supporting sustainable agriculture and the environment by featuring natural, organic foods which are free of artificial ingredients and hydrogenated fats.

“At Whole Foods Market, we want to share our enthusiasm for the freshest, most flavorful natural and organic foods available, and we are thrilled to grow our business in Ontario,” said Michael Bashaw, midwest regional president.

“I opened Whole Foods Market’s first Canadian store in 2002. Ever since then, I’ve been convinced that Ontario is a great location for more Whole Foods Market stores. We definitely plan for further growth in the area.”

The Mississauga store will bring about 250 jobs to the city, said today’s announcement (Feb. 16).

“We couldn’t be more pleased to have Whole Foods Market join the Square One family,” said Nance MacDonald, the shopping centre’s general manager. “(It) embodies everything we stand for at Square One: a devotion to community, a provider of delicious, high-quality foods and a top-notch employer.”
