Oakville residents are going to be able to experience the Olympic spirit first-hand tomorrow as the Olympic Flame makes its journey across Canada to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Games.

“The town is proud to have the Olympic torch pass through Oakville on its long journey to Vancouver,” Councillor Tom Adams said. “The Olympic spirit is alive and well here, and we’re excited to welcome the torch on December 19.”

The Town of Oakville is one of 1,000 Canadian communities the Olympic Torch will pass through on its way to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The torch will arrive in Oakville on Saturday, December 19, 2009.  The relay route through Oakville will follow along Lakeshore Road from Southdown Road to Dorval Drive. Oakville residents are encouraged to come out for this exciting, historic event and show support for Canada by wearing red and white.

Let’s show Canada and the world that national pride burns bright here in Oakville!

“As a community that is a passionate and proud supporter of recreational sports in Oakville we hope the torch will inspire all our athletes to reach for their dreams,” added Adams. “After all, the young athletes of today may be the Olympians of tomorrow.”

Oakville is the hometown of several outstanding Olympians, from Larry Cain to Donovan Bailey to Adam VanKouverden.
